The project consisted of transforming the James Cond Building from a former 1920’s printworks into University College Brimingham’s Centre for Sustainable Construction.
Wintech provided a comprehensive building services design role, supporting the integration of mechanical, electrical and public health systems within a complex refurbishment setting. Our involvement included dynamic thermal modelling, EPC and Part L assessments, 2D coordination and construction support, helping to ensure the building services strategy aligned with the project’s sustainability ambitions and operational requirements.

The building incorporates energy efficient and renewable technologies, including air source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, automated lighting controls and energy monitoring linked to the building management system. These measures support improved energy performance, reduce reliance on traditional fossil fuel systems and provide students with visible, accessible examples of sustainable building operation in practice.
Through careful coordination and a pragmatic design approach, Wintech contributed to a project that balances heritage, performance and education. The completed facility now provides a future-focused learning environment where the next generation of construction professionals can understand how building services, low carbon technologies and smart systems come together to create more sustainable, efficient and resilient buildings.
