As part of our “What Lies Ahead in 2025” campaign, we are reaching out to Wintech leaders to share their perspectives on key industry challenges and opportunities. Today, Wintech ‘s Technical Director, Antony Humphrey, shared his thoughts on the evolving landscape of façade design and material compliance.
The Grenfell Tower tragedy was a watershed moment for the construction industry, triggering a comprehensive overhaul of industry regulations. This legislative shift has undeniably improved safety standards, prioritising fire compliance for newly constructed and renovated buildings. Occupiers and building owners now benefit from enhanced protection, which is a significant and necessary advancement.
However, for material suppliers and manufacturers, the transition has been less straightforward. Many previously approved products were rendered obsolete almost overnight, forcing companies to innovate rapidly to meet new fire safety criteria. While this focus on fire performance is essential, it has come at a cost: the broader functional attributes of some materials have been deprioritised in the rush to achieve compliance.
This creates a significant challenge for the façade industry. A building’s façade is not merely an aesthetic feature; it is a complex system designed to provide thermal insulation, weather resistance, acoustics, and durability, among other critical functions. Balancing these requirements with stringent fire safety standards is no small task.
Almost eight years after the Grenfell Tower fire, the industry is still catching up. Materials are being refined and re-engineered to meet the full spectrum of performance expectations while adhering to enhanced safety regulations. The question remains: how do we strike the right balance? How can we ensure that façades perform as intended without compromising safety?
Innovation, collaboration, and rigorous testing will be key as we navigate this ongoing evolution. By addressing these challenges head-on, we can create safer, more resilient buildings that meet the complex demands of the modern built environment.
