Wintech is proud to continue its collaboration with Imperial College London, supporting third-year MEng Civil Engineering students through their Group Design Project and providing valuable exposure to today’s practical consultancy challenges.

This year’s project explored the effectiveness of natural smoke ventilation in low-rise and mid-rise residential apartment buildings. Students investigated whether current prescriptive guidance remains appropriate across different building configurations, using parametric and CFD-based analysis to assess factors such as building height, corridor length, wind conditions, vent configurations, and sprinkler interaction.

Over an intensive five-week programme, the students modelled complex scenarios, analysed performance data, challenged existing acceptance criteria, and presented their findings each week to a review panel of Wintech professionals and Imperial academic staff. Beyond the technical challenge of carrying out the modelling and simulating likely scenarios, the students were exposed to the real-life challenge of navigating legal requirements, industry guidance, and emerging research to provide a safety in design – a challenge faced by industry professionals daily.

A big thank you to all the students and Imperial professors Dr John Craske and Prof. Graham Hughes.
