Preserving historic structures requires a thoughtful balance of technical rigour, inquisitiveness and respect. Wintech applied these principles through our recent involvement with the Victoria Centre clock tower in Nottingham, an iconic remnant of the city’s railway heritage.
Originally constructed between 1898 and 1900, the clock tower at the Victoria Shopping Centre is one of only two surviving elements of the former Nottingham Victoria railway station, which was largely demolished in 1967. The structure stands approximately 37 metres high with a 7m x 7m footprint, built in red brick and featuring stone balconies, balustrades, and corner turrets at various levels. A copper-clad dome and weathervane complete its distinctive profile, with a clock dial on each of its four elevations at the 5th floor.
Wintech were appointed by Savills to undertake a comprehensive condition survey, which included, a drone-based external fabric inspection, a non-intrusive internal survey, a detailed report with recommendations focused on the continued structural integrity and safe retention of the tower.
This project offered an excellent opportunity to apply our diagnostics expertise within a heritage context—balancing precision, sensitivity, and minimal disruption to a publicly visible structure.
