Structural Analysis

Our structural engineers boast a range of skills and experience, and are adept with dealing with a variety of materials and systems, ranging from structural frames in steel and reinforced concrete – to secondary elements such as rooflights and façades utilising glass, timber, brickwork, stone, aluminium and composite materials.

Supported by a suite of linear and finite element analysis tools, our structural engineers excel at addressing complex problems and structural challenges.

CFD Modelling

Advanced flow modelling is becoming increasingly necessary to optimise buildings as the bar is raised both in terms of energy performance and safety in fire. Wintech can offer CFD modelling to complement our fire engineering services to model spread of smoke in a fire and optimise escape strategies.

Daylight and Overheating Analysis

Balancing natural daylight levels against the risk of overheating is a must for any building that seeks to achieve low energy consumption and high levels of visual and thermal comfort.

Adequate daylighting boosts productivity, health, energy savings, and connection to nature. It’s a key focus for projects aiming for high BREEAM ratings, GLA standards, or bespoke requirements. Using advanced 3D modelling, we analyse daylight and artificial lighting impacts, optimising window placement, shading, and reflective surfaces to enhance comfort and efficiency and find the perfect balance between natural and artificial lighting.

Overheating in buildings is a growing concern due to climate change, better façade insulation, and low air permeability, leading to health risks during heatwaves. Our overheating analysis uses advanced thermal modelling and CIBSE standards to design effective strategies, factoring in solar gains, occupancy, and equipment. With expertise in façades, we focus on reducing solar heat and integrating passive ventilation to minimise reliance on active cooling.

U-value and Thermal Bridging Assessments

Leveraging on our extensive database and parametric tools, we provide high-level guidance to improve thermal performance and target critical areas from the start of the project. As façade experts, we optimise junction and interface detailing for maximum efficiency while addressing all performance criteria.

Wintech are able to carry out thermal analyses to EN and US standards, U-Value calculations to assist the design development process. Wintech use finite element thermal analysis software on a range of platforms, capable of assessing both 2D and 3D details under static or dynamic conditions to calculate temperature and heat transfer between components of the design. These tools are used to assess component U-values, (such as windows or walls), overall fabric U-values, or heat loss through specific thermal bridges.

Condensation Risk Assessment

Evaluating the risks related to condensation formation in new and refurbished buildings is essential from the start of the project.  As buildings become more and more airtight and reliant on effective ventilation, be it mechanical or natural, the risks of mould growth and condensation formation can increase significantly.  This can lead to undetected material deterioration and mould growth, which can affect the long term health of the buildings occupants.

Wintech uses a range of tools to assess the risk of condensation formation on or within the external wall and façade elements, and can also review ventilation systems to help ensure these are performing as required. Wintech has access to finite element modelling tools to assess more complex junctions, as well as dynamic 2D software such as WUFI to more accurately assess problematic junctions and advise on risks of moisture accumulation, mould growth and corrosion.
